Course Outline

Overview

For our inter-institutional course exploring the plays of Euripides, we will read five tragedies in ten weeks.  In our two-week focus on each play, the Tribe groups will share and discuss their responses to the play’s writing prompt, a Common Session discussion will provide background for the play, the Tribes will polish their best responses, and then each Tribe will present their final response to the entire community in a Common Session. In the manner of the dramatic festival competitions in ancient Athens, we will vote on the best response for each play.

Bi-Weekly Structure

Week A

  • Tuesday: All participants post responses to the writing prompt in their Tribe group’s forum.
  • WednesdayCommon Session hangout: background discussion
  • Thursday:  vote (via survey) on which response from their Tribe members is the strongest using the course rubric. After a representative response is chosen, the Tribe works together to edit and improve the response in order to present it to the larger group, using the site’s Tribe chat rooms to comment and make suggestions.

Week B

  • Monday: Each Tribe submits its final response to the forum, and elect a representative to present the group’s work during the Common Session.
  • Wednesday: Common Session hangout: tribe presentations. All participants vote on which tribe developed the strongest response.
